Designer Advice
April 22nd, 2009I don’t wish I was a morning person. However, it does make it difficult as a nine-to-fiver when my most productive/creative time is midnight. Perusing through some designer websites/tweets and found this great advice.
http://www.josephallenkohlhas.com/portfolio/designerd-advice/
This advice has been recorded as much for students of design as it has been to serve as a constant self-reminder.
I need one of these (personal constant self-reminder). I love: Guts. Everyone has got them, though not everyone can say that they trust their own. Trust your gut and most of all “believe.” You can only overcome obstacles by believing you can.
Happy Earth Day!
April 22nd, 2009Google Maps and Google Earth are pretty cool online tools. It amazes (and scares) me that I can zoom in on my house and see myself standing in the front yard. Just kidding! Even though I’m not on Google Maps, it is a very powerful web tool and makes me think about the future of the web and what tools like Google Maps and Google Earth can and will be used for.
To celebrate Earth Day, I’ve compiled a list below. Tons of people have made custom Google Maps, showing anything from dead cell phone areas to Earthquakes. There’s already a website for that. Instead I’ve listed extra creative ways people have utilized the tool.
The most recent is a Google Maps Alphabet (via every design blog) by Rhett Dashwood. He’s come up with the aerials from Google Maps of letters A through Z.
Even cooler is Street With A View. To quote from their website, “On May 3rd 2008, artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley invited the Google Inc. Street View team and residents of Pittsburgh’s Northside to collaborate on a series of tableaux along Sampsonia Way.”
There’s also Where on Google Earth, a trivia website using locations visible by Google Earth (via Planet Green).
Street View Fun posts fun and funny images that were taken by the Street View team.
Google Maps Mania is dedicated to Google Maps, and posts just about anything there is related to it!
Google Sight Seeing (exactly what it sounds like) posted about fictional characters being caught by the Street View team.
Melanie Coles did her graduation project inspired by Where’s Waldo – only in Google Earth: Where On Earth Is Waldo.
Brock Davis is my new hero

“This first one has been circulating the net for some time, but perhaps you haven’t seen his drawing of a unicorn with a unibrow on a unicycle…”
Actually, no. No, I haven’t. Awesome.
Paper Studio Closing
April 20th, 2009I meant to post about this when I first received the e-blast. Apparently the Paper Studio in Tempe, which did a lot of nifty workshops and sold handmade papers, is closing. It’s definitely a bummer that the crafty shop didn’t make it in the down economy – then again, this is Arizona, not New York. What niche, local store ever thrives here? They’ll still be offering their paper-related classes and keeping their online store open, a few positives.
Last open day is May 2, and they’re having an inventory clearance until then (or earlier if everything gets sold out).
Websites in the 90s
April 17th, 2009Just found these old blog posts while doing research for a personal project. Ah, the good old days.
Awesome.
High Speed Rail
April 17th, 2009I’ve wanted to make a post about this as it’s been the buzz on several blogs I frequent. I love the idea of high speed rail. It’s about time. I’ve used the rail system in Europe, and it’s such a nice alternative to taking a bus or renting a car. My only irk is that the planned high speed California line isn’t coming down to Phoenix. Why you be dissing us, Obama?
On the other hand, does this say something about Arizonans? Haha!
